At Annual Retreat, Leon County Updates Five-Year Strategic Plan

At this year's annual retreat, the Board of County Commissioners reviewed and updated the County’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2022-2026 Strategic Plan with the addition of 20 new or amended strategic initiatives that advance the organization’s strategic priorities in the areas of Economy, Environment, Quality of Life and Governance. The initiatives outlined in the strategic plan address the community’s greatest needs, such as affordable housing, health care, food insecurity and so much more.

"I am proud of the Board's remarkable work yesterday at our annual retreat, as we came together to ensure the continued successes of our community," said Leon County Commission Chair Carolyn Cummings. "Through strategic planning, we will continue to address the needs of our community and celebrate the progress of the County throughout the year."

As a part of the retreat, the Board received an overview of the County’s leading role and ongoing efforts to celebrate and recognize the community’s 2024 Tallahassee-Leon County Bicentennial. Further, the County unveiled and showcased its “200 Years of Representation and Progress” history kiosk, an interactive touchscreen experience highlighting current and past County officials, significant County achievements and projects by decade, and a historical overview of Leon County.

"The County's strategic planning process is key to continuously delivering results on a daily basis to our citizens," said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. "The process aligns the County’s resources towards achieving very tangible results on bigger, longer term projects, and also issues and needs you can’t fully plan for.”

As part of the update, Commissioners reviewed the progress towards reaching the bold goals and five-year targets outlined in the FY 2022-2026 Strategic Plan, highlighting successes in the following areas:

  • Attracting 32 state, regional and national championships across all sports to Leon County;
  • Connecting 3,700 students to skilled job opportunities through Leon Works and other talent development initiatives;
  • Securing $66.3 million in federal, state and local benefits for Leon County veterans and their families;
  • Supporting 252 community events, festivals and cultural programming that attract thousands of visitors and residents;
  • Offering 100% online permitting for licensed contractors, engineers, and architects;
  • Diverting 1.47 million pounds of household hazardous waste from the landfill;
  • Increasing the number of fully electric vehicles in the County’s fleet by 225%;
  • And so much more.
