Annual Created Equal Event Recognizes 60th Anniversary of
Tallahassee Lunch Counter Sit-Ins

WHAT: Created Equal: 60th Anniversary of Tallahassee Lunch Counter Sit-Ins Announcement
WHEN: Thursday, January 16 at 10:30 a.m.
WHERE: Near the Tallahassee-Leon County Civil Rights Heritage Walk, 220 S Monroe St.
Leon County Government and The Village Square will host a press conference announcing the fifth annual Created Equal program entitled, “Created Equal: 60th Anniversary of Tallahassee Lunch Counter Sit-ins.” The press conference will be held on Thursday, January 16 at 10:30 a.m. near the Tallahassee-Leon County Civil Rights Heritage Walk, 220 S. Monroe St.
The press conference will feature comments from the following speakers:
- Reverend Henry Steele, who was jailed at the age of 16 for his involvement in the 1960 lunch counter sit-ins. Reverend Henry Steele is the son of legendary civil rights icon Reverend C.K. Steele.
- John Due, an attorney and husband of Patricia Stephens Due, the FAMU student leader who led the 1960 lunch counter sit-ins and created the civil rights movement’s first jail-ins because she refused to pay the fines for segregation. Patricia Stephens Due passed away in 2012.
- Leon County officials, Chairman Bryan Desloge and Commissioner Bill Proctor.
- Representatives from The Village Square.
Speakers will describe the historical significance of the Tallahassee Lunch Counter Sit-ins both in 1960 and what they still mean today. The press conference will occur adjacent to the old Woolworth lunch counter where the protests began.
At the program, representatives will announce the date, time, and location of the fifth annual Created Equal event.
