From the Director

What's new at the Library?  Enough to fill a special edition of our newsletter! It's time for The Big Read featuring Hope Jahren's book, Lab Girl. Look for free copies of the book (yours to keep) at all libraries beginning Monday, February 1st.   Dr. Jahren's book helps us discover and ultimately celebrate women in science during February and March.  Right on the heels of the Big Read kickoff is The Big Seed (Library), Spring 2021.  Our annual African American Read-In, a Library tradition for many years, is going virtual and promises to be an enjoyable hour for all ages.  In addition, there are important updates on our e-books, downloadable audio books, and digital magazine access.  Please read on!

RFID Self-Checkout Update

Our libraries are in the process of converting to a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system.  This change will provide safe, fast and fun checkout experience.  Check out a whole stack of books, movies and more in a single action, then grab and go!  The new equipment will be rolled out gradually, location by location, over the next several weeks.  Expect to see some exciting changes inside the libraries as we adjust for new self-checkout kiosks and other equipment.

Library Lecture: Changing Faces in STEM: Heartwork Grounded in Service, Science, and Scholarship with keynote speaker Dr. Adrienne Stephenson

Thursday, February 11 @ 6:30 p.m.

Join Leon County and the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read Kickoff on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science for an inspiring Library Lecture featuring local scientist and educator, Dr. Adrienne Stephenson.

Dr. Stephenson will lead a discussion of her personal journey as a Black woman in STEM and how her intersecting passions help to change the narrative of science education empowering young people to discover their highest potential.

From Dr. Stephenson: "How often do we take time to reflect on what motivates us to do what we love most? My WHY is defined by my multiple identities and intersecting passions, Black, Woman, Scientist, Scholar, and Servant Leader. Collectively, they empower me to work to change the narrative of what a scientist looks like and give youth especially those underrepresented in STEM spaces reflections of who they can become."

Leon County’s Library Lecture Series is free and open to the public. This Library Lecture kicks off the NEA Big Read, Lab Girl by Hope Jahren, an award-winning autobiography about her life in science and battle with mental health issues.
