Leon County Government invites the community to the next installment of the award-winning Library Lecture Series, “Words From the Machine: Why AI Chooses the Words It Does,” on Wednesday, May 6, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Leon County Main Library, 200 West Park Avenue.
This engaging lecture will explore how artificial intelligence systems generate language and why they make certain word choices. Blending insights from computational linguistics and philosophy, the discussion will examine how AI models are trained, how they reflect human communication patterns, and what their growing influence means for the way people write, speak, and understand language.
The program will feature Dr. Thomas Juzek of Florida State University’s Computational Linguistics program and Dr. Zina Ward of Florida State University’s Department of Philosophy, who will offer an interdisciplinary perspective on the relationship between human language and machine learning.
This program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.
Since 2017, the Leon County Library Lecture Series has featured dozens of local, regional, and national speakers to engage and inspire the community with thoughtful discussions about topics in the arts and sciences.
