Leon County Launches Countdown to
2026 World Athletics Cross Country Championships

Leon County Government is kicking off the one-year countdown to the 2026 World Athletics Cross Country Championships. To celebrate this monumental hosting opportunity, residents are invited to a communitywide kick-off event on Saturday, January 11, at 10 a.m. at Apalachee Regional Park.
 
This family-friendly event marks the start of a yearlong countdown the most prestigious competition in international cross country running. The world-class championship will mark a historic milestone as the first-ever world championship sporting event hosted in Tallahassee-Leon County.
 
Citizens can enjoy a free, family 3K fun run on the championship course at 10 a.m., followed by exciting games, complimentary hot dogs, and gold beads for all race finishers. The kickoff event will also feature special appearances by national and international cross-country athletes, including Worlds and Olympic competitors. A special program will follow the race.
 
During the event, attendees will have the opportunity to sign up to volunteer for the historic World Athletics Cross Country Championship and to earn branded merchandise and insider updates leading up to the Worlds event.
 
The World Athletics Cross Country Championships is expected to draw more than 550 runners from over 60 countries competing in five official races, as well as 10,000 spectators from around the United States and world. It will also be internationally televised and is estimated to have a $4.3 million economic impact. World Athletics is the international governing body for all running, jumping, throwing, and walking sports.
