Leon County Government invites the community to celebrate a decade of growth at the Fall Seed Library Kickoff on Saturday, August 2, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the downtown Leon County Main Library, 200 West Park Avenue. This year marks 10 years of the Leon County Seed Library Program, which has provided more than 1.3 million seeds to encourage healthy eating habits and sustainable gardening since 2015.
In partnership with UF/IFAS Leon County Extension, the kickoff event will offer engaging activities for all ages, including hands-on seeding, gardening demonstrations, a healthy cooking showcase, and expert advice from Master Gardeners. Staff from the Leon County Office of Sustainability and UF/IFAS Leon County Extension will be on-site to answer questions about vegetable gardening, composting, and other sustainable practices.
Starting Saturday, August 2, citizens can check out up to five seed packets per month with a library card, or three packets per month without a card, at any Leon County Public Library location, while supplies last. Seeds are free and do not need to be returned. Residents can register for or check the status of a library card at LeonCountyLibrary.org/LibraryCard.
The fall 2025 seed varieties include:
- Black Tuscan Lacinato Kale
- Bronze Mignonette Lettuce
- Fino Fennel
- Halloween Mix Radish
- Kuroda Long Carrot
- Magenta Sunset Swiss Chard
- Mizuna Red Streaks Mustard Green
- Parisian Carrot

Since its launch in 2015, the Leon County Seed Library has offered 135 unique seasonal seed varieties and has logged nearly 143,000 seed checkouts, empowering residents to grow gardens and embrace sustainable living.
