What is Hazardous Waste?

Hazardous waste is any form of waste that poses a threat to human health and/or the environment. Hazardous waste can be flammable, corrosive, reactive, or toxic.

What is the Leon County Hazardous Waste Center?

The Hazardous Waste Center is your one-stop location for household hazardous waste and electronics disposal. Its services are free for all Leon County households. In FY 22-23, the center processed 530 tons of potentially hazardous material from an estimated 19,600 residents and businesses, of which 338 tons were removed from the solid waste stream through recycling or
reuse.

Other Drop-Off Locations

Rural Waste Service Centers
Paints, used oils, car batteries and fluorescent bulbs can be dropped off at the Ft. Braden, Miccosukee or Woodville Rural Waste Service Centers. All other hazardous waste should be taken to the main Household Hazardous Waste Center at 7550 Apalachee Parkway.

What We Accept

Household Items
Aerosols, personal care items (nail polish and remover, hair color), spot removers, glues, lamp oil and light bulbs.
Electronics
Phones, printers and ink cartridges, computers, televisions, fax machines, cables, mice, external drives, modems, electronic games, stereos, pagers, radios, DVDs, CDs, VHS, and cassettes.
Cleaners
Oven and drain cleaners, floor-care products, ammonia, metal and furniture polish, toilet bowl cleaner, and mildew, lime, bleach or rust remover.
Garage
Motor oil, gasoline (limit 15 gallons), fuel oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission fluid, parts cleaner, paint (limit 15 gallons), stains, glue, pain thinner, turpentine, solvents, oils, caulks, herbicides, insecticides, pool chemicals, lighter fluid, and mercury thermometers.
Batteries
Alkaline, rechargeable, watch, and car batteries.

What We Do Not Accept

Stryofoam
We cannot accept Styrofoam
Medical Waste and Perscription Drugs
We cannot accept Medical Waste and Perscription Drugs. Sharps (needles and lancets) containers are available at the Florida Department of Health in Leon County.
Radioactive Waste
We cannot accept Radioactive Waste
Compressed Gas Cyliners
We cannot safely accept compressed gas cylinders other than 1 pound and 20-pound (barbecue size) propane cylinders. We cannot safely accept large propane cylinders, cylinders containing oxygen, air, carbon monoxide, acetylene or nitrogen, and scuba tanks. Those cylinders should be returned to the business that supplied them (retailer, medical supplies service, dive shops).

Drums and Pallets

We use specific types of drums and pallets to safely ship hazardous waste and electronics. These are supplies that we either buy or are provided by our vendors, so neither is available to the public for use.
