Advanced Septic Systems Pilot Project

The Advanced Septic Systems Pilot Project is fully funded by a Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Springs Restoration Grant awarded in July 2016. The project will demonstrate the effectiveness and financial feasibility of using passive nitrogen reducing septic systems to reduce the load to the groundwater. The systems will remain once the project is complete.

One neighborhood identified for the new system installations is the Wilkinson Woods subdivision, northeast of the Woodville Rural Community. A second neighborhood in the Primary Springs Protection Zone will be identified in the summer of 2018. Approximately 70 property owners are requested to volunteer for the installation and follow-up monitoring to confirm the effectiveness of the treatment and to provide information on operating costs.

A technical team composed of staff from Leon County, the FDEP, the Northwest Florida Water Management District, and the Florida Department of Health will make the septic system selection. Follow-up monitoring for approximately one year will be performed by FDEP under separate funding after the system is installed on a property.
