Year-Round T.O.U.R. Guide Program Offers Free Admission To Area Attractions
Leon County Government expands and enhances the T.O.U.R. (Tourism is Our Ultimate Resource) Guide Program. Building off the success of last year’s T.O.U.R. Guide Program, the Leon County Division of Tourism Development unveiled the new schedule, which has now been extended year-round and offers free admission to area attractions.
In 2015, nearly one-third of Leon County’s 2.4 million annual visitors visited friends and relatives. Beginning July 16, the T.O.U.R. Guide Program takes place the third Saturday of each month through June 2017 and encourages residents to visit local attractions and invite friends and family to visit from out of town. The new year-long schedule also showcases Leon County as a “budget friendly” destination appealing to young families traveling with children and “Boomer” grandparents traveling with grandchildren.
“Who are better ambassadors for our County than those folks who call Leon County home,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Bill Proctor. “One of the Board’s priorities is to grow our tourism economy through the Capital City Amphitheater, ecotourism getaways and our many cultural institutions. This program is another tool to make that happen.”
The program kicks off on Saturday, July 16 at Mission San Luis – Florida’s only reconstructed 17th century Spanish Mission – from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The free day at Mission San Luis features primitive weapon activities including archery and faux musket drills, living history demonstrations of black powder weapon firing, blacksmithing, period cooking, and make-and-take crafts for children. All ages are admitted for free.
“The T.O.U.R. Guide Program was only a season long, but due to its success, the program has grown to be year-round,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. “The program is the perfect way to highlight the gems we have in our own backyard. From nature to culture to the performing arts, Leon County is a special place for residents to call home and families to visit.”
