Spring Seeds are Sprouting at the Library

WHO:      Leon County
WHAT:    Spring 2018 Seed Library Launch
WHEN:   Saturday, January 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
WHERE: LeRoy Collins Leon County Main Library, 200 W. Park Ave.

Join Leon County for the 2018 Spring Seed Library Launch on Saturday, January 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the LeRoy Collins Leon County Main Library, 200 W. Park Ave.

Meet and learn from Leon County Cooperative Extension master gardeners who will give various gardening demonstrations like composting with worms, cooking with the Spring 2018 varieties, and setting up a garden irrigation station.

Beginning on January 27, while supplies last, library patrons can check out three seed packets per card per month from all seven LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library locations. Library patrons can also browse and check out materials related to gardening and cooking.

The seed varieties for Spring 2018 are Long Leaf Italian Basil, Blue Lake Beans, Straight Eight Cucumbers, Listada de Gandia Eggplant, Aji Dulce Peppers, Butternut Squash, Sugar Baby Watermelon, and three different varieties of tomato; Cherokee Purple (Large), Jaune Flamme (Mid-size), and White Currant (Small). Each packet contains ten seeds.

The Seed Library Program began in 2015 as a way to promote noninvasive, heirloom vegetable seed planting in Leon County and to encourage residents to grow their own nutritious food.
