A Lecture Sure to Strike a Chord

Park Ave. Join Leon County for the second library lecture of the year featuring Pulitzer Prize and Academy Award winning composer Dr. Ellen Taaffe Zwilich and internationally known music ensemble Trio Azul. The event will take place on Thursday, April 19 at 7 p.m. at the LeRoy Collins Leon County Main Library, 200 W. Park Ave. Dr. Zwilich, who was recently inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame, is the recipient of numerous prizes and honors, including the 1983 Pulitzer Prize in Music, an Academy Award, four Grammy nominations, and the NPR and WNYC Gotham Award for her contributions to the musical life of New York City. Dr. Zwilich earned her doctorate from The Juilliard School and was the first woman to receive a Pulitzer Prize in Music. In 1995, Zwilich was named to the first Composer's Chair in the history of Carnegie Hall. She now serves as the Francis Eppes Distinguished Professor at Florida State University.Following the lecture, internationally known musical ensemble Trio Azul will perform a selection of piano trios among the shelves on the second floor of the Main Library. Their distinct musical tastes have led this chamber group to repertoire engagements of rarely performed piano trios by Claude Debussy and Ernest Chausson, in addition to contemporary works by Dr. Ellen Taafe Zwilich. Leon County has selected speakers and topics that engage and inspire, appealing to the interests of all citizens. At each lecture books and materials will be displayed and available for check out.
