Plant for the Future with Leon County’s Adopt-a-Tree Program
Leon County Government is now accepting applications for its Adopt-a-Tree Program, offering three different native trees for residents to adopt and plant at home for free. The program is open to all residents of Leon County who live outside the city limits.
Applications will be accepted through January 31, 2021 at LeonCountyFL.gov/AdoptATree on a first come, first served basis. Trees will be planted between February and March 2021.
This year, residents may choose between the following three native species:
- Sweetbay Magnolia, which is a slender evergreen;
- Swamp White Oak, which is a large shade tree with a spreading canopy; and
- Red Buckeye, a small tree that grows to about 20 feet in height.
When submitting an application, residents may select the “delivery only” option if they wish to plant the tree at their own convenience. If assistance is needed, residents may select the “delivery and plant” option and Public Works staff will assist in tree placement and installation while observing all Centers for Disease Control health guidelines. In return, the County requests that homeowners water the tree three times a week for one year. The tree may be planted anywhere between a house and any publicly maintained road or any privately maintained road with public access.
Since 2012, through the Adopt-a-Tree Program, Leon County has planted 1,775 trees in 210 neighborhoods, allowing citizens to add beauty and value to their property and community.
Individuals living within the Tallahassee city limits are encouraged to take advantage of the City of Tallahassee’s Adopt-a-Tree program by visiting Talgov.com/AdoptATree.
