Leon County Government and the Knight Creative Communities Institute (KCCI) invite media partners to the unveiling of three new artistic crosswalks near the Judge Augustus D. Aikens, Jr. Leon County Courthouse. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on Tuesday, March 18, at 10 a.m. at the Ausley McMullen offices (adjacent to crosswalks), 123 S Calhoun St.
The artistic crosswalks are located along Calhoun Street at the intersections of College Avenue and Jefferson Street. Designed to enhance pedestrian safety and celebrate public art, these vibrant crosswalks create a visually engaging connection between the Calhoun Eastside Parking Garage and the Leon County Courthouse along Calhoun Street.
This project supports the County’s ongoing efforts to provide essential public safety infrastructure and promote livability, health, and sense of community by enhancing mobility, expanding public art access and improving the visibility of crosswalks. Funding for the artistic designs on the crosswalks was made possible with a KCCI grant received from the Community Foundation of North Florida Knight Foundation fund.
This project builds on the success of Leon County and KCCI’s 2023 Crosswalks to Classrooms – Dempsey Mayo project, where the County and KCCI installed three artistic crosswalks along Dempsey Mayo Road near W.T. Moore Elementary and Westminster Oaks to enhance pedestrian safety.
