Leon County Government invites the community to celebrate the opening of St. Marks Headwaters Greenway on Wednesday, January 24 at 2 p.m. at 640 Baum Road.
Located south of the Buck Lake and Baum Road intersection, the new trailhead will provide access to approximately three miles of trails, perfect for horseback riding, biking, hiking, and running. In addition, the 755-acre greenway offers opportunities for bird watching and viewing wildlife in their natural habitat. The greenway’s namesake, the St. Marks River, highlights 5,000 feet of the greenway. The St. Marks River was designated by the State of Florida as an Outstanding Florida Water Body.
The trailhead features covered pavilions, picnic tables, equestrian and ADA parking, along with a large informational kiosk to keep the community informed of upcoming county events.
Immediately following the opening celebration, a hayride and hiking tours will be available, so wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Light refreshments will also be served.
The second phase of the greenway is currently under design and will include a larger trailhead located on Buck Lake Road providing access to an additional four miles of trails, boardwalks, and observation areas, as well as permanent restroom facilities and a nature-based playground. The third and final phase will occur on the east side of Baum Road and offer trails and viewing platforms in and around Copeland Sink.
