Leon County and CONA Recognize Winners of the 42nd Annual Neighborhood Recognition Program

Last week, Leon County Government and the Council of Neighborhood Associations (CONA) recognized our community’s outstanding neighborhoods and neighbors through the 42nd Annual Neighborhood Recognition Program. This year’s winners were recognized for going above and beyond in the last year to make our community a better place to live, work, and play.

“For more than four decades, Leon County has proudly celebrated local neighborhoods and community leaders through our Neighborhood Recognition Program,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Nick Maddox. “Whether assisting neighbors in need or hosting events to bring everyone together, Leon County neighbors support one another and help make our neighborhoods feel like home.”

The 2023 winners include:

  • Small Neighborhood of the Year (200 homes or fewer) – Kinsail Unit One Homeowners Association
    • Kinsail Unit One prepared their neighborhood for hurricane season by trimming and removing trees before a storm hits to reduce storm damage and keep their neighborhood safe.
  • Large Neighborhood of the Year (more than 200 homes) – Lafayette Oaks Homeowners Association
    • Lafayette Oaks has an active social committee that plans neighborhood events to bring the community together and gives back to the wider Leon County community by volunteering for events and programs, including the annual Leon County Operation Thank You Veterans Day Breakfast.
  • Unincorporated Neighborhood of the Year (outside the city limits) – Landover Hills Homeowners Association
    • Landover Hills works together to support one another by collecting donations for the elderly and hosting events to bring everyone together, including a summer kickoff celebration and a holiday party.
  • Neighbor of the Year – Irene Goodner
    • Irene is a dedicated and caring community member who routinely checks in on her elderly neighbors and walks their dogs. This past year, she organized the first Dellwood Drive Pig Roast to bring the neighborhood together for a day of food, fun, and conversation.
“Through the years, Leon County has been impressed time and time again with the compassion and dedication of our neighbors and neighborhoods to one another and the larger community,” said County Administrator Vincent S. Long. “All of our nominees and winners should be proud of the positive impact they have had throughout Leon County.”

The Neighborhood of the Year Award winners received a sign to display at their neighborhood entrances. The Neighbor of the Year Award winner received a personalized plaque that highlights the individual’s leadership and service to the community.

“Neighborhoods and the folks who live in them are vital to the well-being of our community,” said Leroy Peck, President of CONA. “CONA is thrilled to continue our partnership with Leon County to host this important recognition program and celebrate what makes our community so wonderful. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners!”
