Leon County Sets Bold Goals for Next Five Years
The Leon County Board of County Commissioners held its annual retreat today at the Goodwood Carriage House Conference Center to prepare the Fiscal Year 2017 to Fiscal Year 2021 Strategic Plan.
“I am very proud of the way the Commission continues to work together in a collegial spirit to review and update the Strategic Plan. With great pride, the Commission accepts the responsibility of making our County safe, healthy, and vibrant for everyone,” said Leon County Commission Chairman John E. Dailey. “Looking ahead to the next five years, we will continue achieving our goals by working with staff, citizens and community partners.”
Following productive discussion about Leon County’s upcoming opportunities and challenges, the Board established Strategic Initiatives that support and advance the Board’s Strategic Priorities in the areas of Economy, Environment, Quality of Life, and Governance. Also, the Board reviewed bold goals and targets for the next five years, focusing on growing the tourism economy like never before, protecting our natural resources, helping local veterans, and bringing citizen ideas and recommendations to life.
As part of the retreat, Commissioners were presented the County’s Impact and Progress Report for the 2012-2016 Strategic Plan, which highlights five years of bold projects, big results, and striving to be the best. The report showcased how the Board’s Strategic Plan led to bold, game-changing projects and successes over the past five years.
“The Board is to be commended for the work they continue to do on behalf of our citizens,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. “They continue to provide clear and consistent leadership on the challenging and changing issues facing our community. Over the past five years, the Strategic Plan has been a strong foundation for aligning the Board's top priorities with the optimized resources of the organization, leading to big results in a slowly recovering, post-recession economy. The momentum from the strategic planning process helps us continue to shape and serve our community for years to come."
Over the past five years, the Board’s priorities were supported by 154 specific strategic initiatives. To date, 148 (96%) of the strategic initiatives have been completed, with only 6 (4%) still in progress. Just a few of the game-changing projects include passing the penny sales tax, launching Leon Works to bridge the middle-skilled career gap, building and opening the County’s Apalachee Regional Park, and establishing the Domi Station business incubator for our best and brightest.
The strategic priorities and initiatives discussed today will come back before the Board for final approval and ratification in January 2017.
