Don’t Miss the Healthy Communities Festival This Saturday

Celebrate Earth Month with Food, Entertainment and Family Fun at Cascades Park

Every day is Earth Day in Tallahassee, and a communitywide celebration of Earth Month will take place this Saturday, April 23, at Cascade Park. The City of Tallahassee, along with Leon County Government and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, is hosting the Healthy Communities Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the park’s Centennial Field. (In case of severe weather, the event will be held Sunday, April 24.)

The second annual festival, geared for all ages, will feature a walk, educational booths, live entertainment, demonstrations and food vendors. The goal is to share sustainability information and practices that make our community healthy – healthy environment, healthy economy and healthy people.

"The City of Tallahassee is thrilled to cohost this weekend's Healthy Communities Festival, showcasing our community's commitment to sustainability," said Mayor Andrew Gillum. "From installing new bike lanes to planning for a new 100-acre solar farm, we are doing our part every day to preserve and enhance the planet for generations to come."

“For Leon County, sustainability is not just an idea; it's part of what we do,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Bill Proctor. “The Healthy Communities Festival is a unique collaborative effort with our partners, and we are proud to be a part of the event.”

Before all the green-themed fun begins, there will be a three-mile Move.Tallahassee.com walk beginning at 8:30 a.m. Walkers need not register but just meet at the Meridian Plaza, behind the amphitheater, and enjoy the beauty of Cascades Park as they tour the park’s trails.

Beginning at 9 a.m., everyone may begin visiting more than 70 exhibitor booths throughout the park. The booths will feature educational information, giveaways and interactive, hands-on activities. Attendees will be able to learn about composting, community gardening, solar energy, fitness and much more. There will even be a yoga class at 1:30 p.m. (Those interested should bring a mat and wear comfortable clothes.)

To keep the energy moving throughout the day, Centennial Field stage will feature live entertainment from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Acts will include the TCC Dance Company, Trousdell Ballerinas, Trousdell Gymnastics Dance Team and the reggae group Positive Vibrations Redeemed.

The festival is free and open to the publicVisit Talgov.com for parking availability and instructions on how to request special accommodations. Follow the fun on social media using #HCFTally.
