County Emergency Management Director Elected Vice President of Statewide Association
Today, Leon County Emergency Director Kevin Peters was elected vice president of the Florida Emergency Preparedness Association (FEPA) during its annual meeting held in Orlando, Florida. With more than 600 members from local, regional, state, federal, and tribal organizations, FEPA is Florida's leading association of emergency managers.
“Our County’s emergency management personnel have responded to pandemics, hurricanes, tornadoes, and so much more,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Nick Maddox. “We are proud that Kevin can bring that experience to the state level and help build community resilience.”
Having served nearly 20 years with Leon County Emergency Management, Peters has led the County in building community-wide resilience in the face of numerous unprecedented challenges surrounding disasters and public health, including Hurricanes Hermine (2016), Irma (2017), Michael (2018), Elsa (2021), and the COVID-19 pandemic. This ongoing commitment resulted in Leon County being designated as the first #HurricaneStrong community in the nation by the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) and becoming the nationwide standard for disaster resilience.
“Our County staff continue to be leaders both in the field and amongst their peers,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. “As a County, we are fortunate to have Kevin in his role as Emergency Management Director, and now he will lend his expertise and experience to the statewide disaster preparedness association.”
Before he was appointed vice president of the FEPA, Peters served as the FEPA Alternative Area 2 Governor from 2015 to 2018, as the FEPA liaison to the Florida Emergency Response Committee for Hazardous Materials from 2016 to 2022, and currently serves as the co-chair of the FEPA Legislative Working Group.
Along with his role in Leon County Emergency Management, Peters has been active with and serves on several boards and committees, including the State Working Group for Domestic Security Executive Board as the Emergency Management Representative, the Chairman of the Apalachee Local Emergency Planning Committee, the Vice Chairman of the Big Bend Healthcare Coalition, and a member of the Tallahassee-Leon County Local Mitigation Strategy Steering Committee.
“I am honored to be elected by my peers as vice president of FEPA,” said Peters. “I am eager to work with FEPA to promote the emergency management profession and enhance the expertise and operations of offices statewide.”
Peters will serve a one-year term as vice president of the association.
FEPA was created in 1956 to help professional emergency managers work to protect the people of Florida. Peters’ appointment as vice president of the FEPA is consistent with the County’s ongoing commitment to training, community resiliency, and innovation to safeguard the health and welfare of all residents and visitors during an emergency.
“Kevin has a unique combination of practical emergency management skills and proven leadership techniques that will make him an incredible asset to the FEPA Executive Committee as Vice-President,” said FEPA President Shannon Davis Weiner. “I look forward to working alongside him to prepare and protect Floridians from emergencies.”
