County Celebrates Native American Heritage Month with Library Events and Resources

Leon County Government celebrates the achievements and contributions of Native peoples past and present during Native American Heritage Month with events and resources from the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System. Thematic book lists and movie watchlists give citizens of all ages the opportunity to learn about the inspiring Indigenous men and women who helped shape our community and the world. Native American Heritage Month, also called American Indian Heritage Month and American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, takes place each November.

In addition to these resources, citizens are encouraged to attend the County’s upcoming Native American Heritage Month events:

  • Virtual Author Talk with Stanley Milford Jr., Thursday, November 7, at 7 p.m., virtual – Join Navajo Ranger Stanley Milford Jr. as he discusses his new book, The Paranormal Ranger, and shares gripping stories from his real-life investigations into paranormal mysteries in Navajoland.
  • Apalachee Heritage: Exploring Indigenous Culture and Spanish Influence, Saturday, November 9, at 2 p.m., Leon County Main Library – Leon County invites you to discover the rich history of the Apalachee people, an Indigenous group from the Tallahassee area. Hosted in partnership with Mission San Luis, this event will explore Apalachee cultural practices and how interactions with the Spanish shaped their history.
  • Virtual Author Talk with Mona Susan Power, Wednesday, November 20, at 7 p.m., virtual – Author Mona Susan Power will discuss her newest novel, A Council of Dolls, and how her work explores Native rights and Native American culture, focusing on the symbolic role of dolls in Native life.
Throughout the month and all year long, Leon County Government is proud to celebrate the rich and diverse history, heritage, and culture of Native peoples. See a complete list of resources and events at LeonCountyFL.gov/NativeAmericanHeritageMonth.
