County Celebrates Native American Heritage Month with Library Events and Resources

Leon County Government celebrates the achievements and contributions of Native peoples past and present during Native American Heritage Month with events and resources from the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System. Thematic book lists and movie watchlists give citizens of all ages the opportunity to learn about the inspiring Indigenous men and women who helped shape our community and the world. Native American Heritage Month, also called American Indian Heritage Month and American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, takes place each November.

In addition to these in-person and digital resources, citizens are encouraged to attend the County’s upcoming Virtual Author Talk with Joy Harjo on Thursday, November 16, at 4 p.m. In 2019, Harjo was appointed the 23rd United States Poet Laureate, the first Native American to hold the position and the second person to serve three terms in the role. During this virtual event, Harjo will discuss her 2022 memoir Catching the Light and explore her lifetime as a writer and poet. Register for this event at LeonCountyLibrary.org/AuthorTalks.

Throughout the month and all year long, Leon County Government is proud to celebrate the rich and diverse history, heritage, and culture of Native peoples. See a complete list of resources and events at LeonCountyFL.gov/NativeAmericanHeritageMonth.
