County Celebrates Black History Month with Library Events and Resources

Leon County Government celebrates the contributions, triumphs, and achievements of Black Americans during Black History Month with events and resources from the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System. Thematic book lists and movie watchlists give citizens of all ages the opportunity to learn about the inspiring men and women who helped shape our community and the world.

In addition to these in-person and digital resources, citizens are encouraged to attend the County’s upcoming Black History Month events with something for everyone.

• Finding Your Roots: Researching Your Family History for Beginners, Saturday, February 10, from 1-3 p.m., Dr. B.L. Perry, Jr. Branch Library – Experienced researcher Dr. Juanita Gaston will teach attendees how to explore their family tree with a deep dive into birth, marriage, and death records. Registration is required.
• The Antebellum South and Tallahassee’s Bicentennial, Thursday, February 15, from 6-7 p.m., Dr. B.L. Perry, Jr. Branch Library – Violet Sharpe, assistant director of the Riley House Museum, will explore plantation life in the Antebellum South, from family dynamics to spiritual practices, resistance, and treatment. Attendees will learn about maroon communities as temporary havens for runaways and "free black" families in Tallahassee before the Civil War.
• African American Read-In, Saturday, February 17, from 1-2 p.m., downtown Main Library – Join us for the annual Leon County African American Read-In featuring children's books by African American authors. This event brings the community together to build literacy skills by enjoying children’s stories read aloud by local speakers. Audience members will also be invited to read from a selection of books provided by the library. Light refreshments will be provided.
