County Celebrates Black History Month with Library Events and Resources
Leon County Government celebrates the contributions, triumphs, and achievements of Black Americans during Black History Month with the African American Read-In, movie screenings, a genealogy event, story times, and resources from the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System. Thematic book lists and movie watchlists give citizens of all ages the opportunity to learn about the inspiring men and women who helped shape our community and the world.
In addition to these in-person and digital resources, citizens are encouraged to attend the County’s upcoming Black History Month events with something for everyone.
- Preschool Story Time, multiple dates, times, and locations – Designed for children ages three to six, this story time will feature songs, rhymes, and stories focused on Black History Month.
- Black History Month Double Feature, Saturday, February 11 at 11 a.m., downtown Main Library – Enjoy a movie double feature of the 2016 BAFTA Award-winning documentary I Am Not Your Negro (Rated PG-13) starting at 11:30 a.m., followed by the 2016 Academy Award-winning film Moonlight (Rated R), directed by FSU film school alum Barry Jenkins, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided.
- African American Genealogy 101, Saturday, February 11 at 1 p.m., Dr. B.L. Perry, Jr. Branch Library – Experienced researcher Dr. Juanita Gaston will teach you how to explore your family tree with a deep dive into birth, marriage, and death records. Bring a laptop, or check out a library laptop, and begin your search. Registration required.
- Family Story Time, Saturday, February 18 at 11 a.m., Dr. B.L. Perry, Jr. Branch Library – Families can enjoy songs, rhymes, and stories in honor of Black History Month. This program is designed for caregivers and children ages five and younger, but all ages are welcome!
- African American Read-In, Saturday, February 25 at 1 p.m., downtown Main Library – Join us for the 2023 Leon County African American Read-In featuring children's books by African American authors. This event brings the community together to build literacy skills by enjoying children’s stories read aloud by local speakers. Audience members will also be invited to read from a selection of books provided by the library. Light refreshments will be provided. Featured speakers include:
- Wanda Hunter, Leon County Government Assistant County Administrator
- Dr. Kendra Mitchell, Assistant Professor at Florida A&M University in the Department of English and Modern Languages
- Dougla-Khan Stancil, Coordinator of Clinical Programs at Florida A&M University
- Joseph Ward, Neighborhood Medical Center Outreach Specialist/Health Educator
- Regina Browning, Leon County Schools Adult & Community Education Assistant Director
