CONA, County, City Recognize Winning Neighborhoods and Neighbors at Annual Awards
The 2016 Annual Neighborhood Awards reception, hosted by the Council of Neighborhood Associations (CONA), the City of Tallahassee and Leon County, honored winning neighborhoods and neighbors Monday evening at the Tallahassee Community College Capitol Center.
Seven winners from the City of Tallahassee and Leon County were named. Winners in the Large Neighborhood of the Year category (more than 200 homes) were Providence Neighborhood Association for City of Tallahassee and Indianhead Lehigh Neighborhood Association for Leon County. Winners in the Small Neighborhood of the Year category (200 or fewer homes) were Florida A&M Subdivision Neighborhood Association for City of Tallahassee and Avondale Homeowner’s Association for Leon County. The winner of the Leon County Unincorporated Neighborhood of the Year (outside the city limits) was Lafayette Oaks Homes Association.
Winners of the Neighbor of the Year category were Will Guzman, Providence Neighborhood Association for City of Tallahassee and Talethia O. Edwards, Greater Bond Neighborhood Association for Leon County.
“We have some extraordinary people living in Tallahassee,” Mayor Andrew Gillum said. “The CONA neighborhood awards allows our neighbors and neighborhoods to be recognized for all that they do on behalf of our community.”
"Our neighborhoods are the backbone of our community," Leon County Commission Chairman Bill Proctor said. "We are extraordinarily fortunate to have the quality of neighbors and neighborhoods that we enjoy here in Leon County. The caliber of our people makes the difference. We must remain vigilant as citizens to protect, defend and to encourage the very best that we can produce within our various local communities."
Annually, area neighborhoods are encouraged to apply for the seven respective categories. Winning neighborhoods receive a sign to display at their entrance and bragging rights as a Neighborhood of the Year.
"Strong vibrant neighborhoods are the essence of a strong vibrant city, and neighborhoods connect with City and County government as well as the business community," CONA President Leroy Peck said. “The power of connection is an unstoppable force, and this year’s winners exemplify that connectivity.”
CONA presented its annual Public Servant of the Year Award to former City Manager Anita R. Favors Thompson and the 2016 Business Neighbor of the Year Award to Pyramid Construction, Inc./Weser Khufu.
