Building Resilience to Serve and Strengthen Our Community
Today, the Leon County Board of County Commissioners held its Annual Retreat at the Goodwood Carriage House Conference Center and engaged with an industry leader on Leon County’s ongoing efforts to build disaster and community resilience. In addition, Commissioners reviewed and amended Leon County’s five-year strategic plan through the addition of 15 specific strategic initiatives that direct and align organizational action to advance the County’s strategic priorities related to Economy, Environment, Quality of Life, and Governance.
“I am very proud of the way the Commission continues to work together in a collegial spirit to review and update the Strategic Plan. With great pride, the Commission accepts the responsibility of providing residents of Leon County with an exceptional quality of life,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Nick Maddox. “Looking ahead to 2018, we will continue achieving these goals by working with staff, citizens and community partners.”
Following a presentation from Leslie Chapman Henderson, president and chief executive officer of the nonprofit Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH), Commissioners discussed disaster resilience and the role of local leaders in driving community resilience forward.
“The Board is to be commended for the work they continue to do. Especially their long-term focus on building resilience and strengthening our community, said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. “The updated strategic plan aligns with the Board’s priorities and optimizes resources throughout the organization to achieve big results and address our community’s most pressing issues.”
In the afternoon, Commissioners focused on reviewing the progress towards reaching bold goals and five-year targets, highlighting successes in growing the tourism economy, upgrading or eliminating septic tank systems, securing Veterans Affairs benefits for Leon County veterans, and implementing new citizen ideas, improvements, solutions, or opportunities.
The strategic priorities and initiatives discussed today will come back before the Board for final approval and ratification in January 2018.
