As Crews Work to Restore Power, County and City Offer Relief
This evening, Leon County Government and City of Tallahassee officials and Emergency Management staff provided an update on the impacts of Hurricane Hermine on utilities and the relief efforts offered to citizens.
City of Tallahassee Utilities and Talquin Electric are working to restore power as quickly as possible. Due to the significant damage, restoration could take nearly a week for some customers. County and City crews are working around the clock responding to hundreds of downed wires and trees.
The American Red Cross will open a comfort shelter tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 3 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Leon County Main Library, 200 W. Park Avenue. The shelter will be open as needed daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for residents to cool off, hydrate and receive information from area nonprofit agencies.
To assist citizens without water, bottled water distribution sites will be opened at five locations throughout Leon County. Distribution will be from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3 and Sunday, Sept. 4. At the indicated sites below, The Salvation Army will offer canteen food service two times a day at 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

• Ft. Braden Community Center, 16387 Blountstown Hwy (Salvation Army canteen food service)

County and City will resume commercial and residential waste collection service in Tallahassee and unincorporated Leon County on Saturday, Sept. 3. As a reminder, due to the Labor Day holiday, next week all customers will receive service one day later than their regularly scheduled service. Residents able to remove debris from their property can take it to the Leon County Solid Waste Management Facility, 7550 Apalachee Parkway, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Sunday, Sept. 4, and Monday, Sept. 5.
City Utilities would also like to remind citizens that they need to treat a wire on the ground as dangerous. If you see a downed wire, please do not go near it, touch it, walk over it or drive over it. To report downed wires, please call 891-4YOU (4968).
Residents are strongly urged to avoid travel if at all possible. Staying off the roadways will allow crews to work more quickly. Additionally, many traffic lights are out of operation. If travel is necessary, drivers should treat non-working traffic signals as four way stops.
