CosmicCon a huge success!!

On Saturday August 17, the Library held its first ever CosmicCon. Over 500 patrons of all ages attended the event, having fun gaming, cosplaying, participating in fandoms, escaping from a Guardians of the Galaxy escape room, and much more. Due to the success of this event it will likely be an annual event for the citizens of Leon County. Thanks to all who attended and keep an eye out for all library programming coming up soon.

Upcoming Events

Katie Clark joins Booked for Lunch on September 19

Local writer and photographer Katie Clark will be the next speaker at Booked for Lunch on Thursday, September 19 at 12:15 p.m. at the Leon County Main Library.

Katie Clark, has been writing poetry and capturing light and shadows in photography since high school. She's a third generation photographer and gets her inspiration from the beauty of North Florida. Many of her poems have been published in anthologies and her photography has been displayed in galleries across North Florida, including Tallahassee City Hall and FSU Museum of Fine Arts.

Clark will speak about her book, Acceptance of Seasons: Poems Embracing Mental Health, and discuss how poetry and writing can be used to heal the mind.

Booked for Lunch brings local writers to the Library to speak about their work during the lunch hour in a casual setting. Beverages and dessert will be provided.

Teen Advisory Board Donut Social

Thursday, September 19, 4-5 p.m.

What is Teen Advisory Board (TAB) all about? Join current Teen Advisory Board members for donuts and learn about all the opportunities and benefits of being a member. TAB members receive volunteer hours and gain experience planning programs for the library, such as movie nights and escape rooms. Join our amazing group of young leaders!

Science Night

September 26 @ 6:30 p.m.

Leon County Main Library

Science Night is back! Join MagLab’s scientists for a brand new season of fun, hands-on science activities monthly at the Leon County Main Library. This program is designed for 1^st-5^thgraders (though all ages are welcome).

2019-2020 Science Night Season Dates: September 26, 2019; October 24, 2019; November 21, 2019; January 23, 2020; February 20, 2020; March 26, 2020; and April 23, 2020.

Crazy 8's Bedtime Math Club is back for a second year at the Leon County Libraries! With the goal of helping to make math fun, the club will host educational activities in weekly sessions from October through November. Starting October 1, the Main Library will host 3rd to 5th grade students every Tuesday from 4 - 5 p.m. The Eastside Branch Library will host Kindergarten to 2nd grade after school every Wednesday in October & November. Boards and Books Tabletop Gaming

Monday, September 9 at 6 p.m.

Why be bored when you can play board games? Embrace “boardom” at Boards and Books, the Library's inaugural tabletop game night. Bring old friends and make new ones playing Monopoly, create a world of adventure in Dungeons and Dragon, or see who’s who in Codenames. Games and more are free to play September 9, starting at 6 p.m. in Program Room B, County Main Library.

Pop-Up Book Club

Saturday, September 14 and Saturday, October 12

The Pop-Up Book Club is a great way to explore wonderful books, meet new friends and sample a variety of food and drink around Tallahassee/Leon County. We meet at a different venue every 2nd Saturday of the month at 10 a.m. Join us for our inaugural meeting on September 14,when we discuss Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult (copies are available at the Leon County Main Library Reference desk). October’s title is Beartown by Fredrik Backman. The meetings’ locations will be announced two weeks before we meet.

Annie Get Your Glue Gun

Thursday, September 12 and Thursday, October 10 at 3 p.m.

BYOC (Bring Your Own Craft) to this crafter’s meetup at the Leon County Main Library the second Thursday of every month at 3:00 p.m.. Bring a project to work on plus share your ideas and tips with others. Have a crafting question? We have a book for that! You can take advantage of the Library’s crafting collection during this meetup. Light refreshments will be provided.

True Crime Movie Night

Thursday, October 17 at 6:30 p.m.

Calling all true crime fans! Join us for a screening of a true crime documentary (title to be announced) on Thursday, October 17 at 6:30 p.m. Youth 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Light refreshments will be provided.

Branch Update

Northeast Branch Library

5513 Thomasville Rd

The patrons and staff at the Northeast Branch Library enjoyed a busy summer of reading challenges, StoryTimes and special performances. We served an average of 78 patrons per hour for the months of June and July! The summer also brought improvements to the building and grounds – a new entry sign, replacement fence on the perimeter, and installation of solar panels on the south facing roof. With the installation at NE Branch library and the Transfer Station this year, we now have solar on 5 buildings, totaling 133 kW.

Our tutor rooms and meeting rooms continue to be used by study groups, community groups, literacy tutors, and various organizations for meetings. The program room also hosts Leon Senior Outreach fitness, yoga, and art classes, and the conference room wall now displays works by the senior artists. The glass display cases rotate collections every other month and currently hold beautiful carved wooden bowls.

As we transition into fall, Northeast Branch Library’s BabyTime, Stay&Play, and StoryTime groups will continue to meet on Wednesday and Thursday mornings in the program room, LEGO club will continue to meet on the second Saturday of each month. The Fiction/Nonfiction Book Club will continue to meet on the first Tuesday of the month and the Mystery Book Club will continue to meet on the third Tuesday of the month in the large conference room.
