Leon County Government invites the community to celebrate the opening of a new St. Marks Headwaters Greenway Trailhead on Thursday, December 12, at 10 a.m. Located at 10995 Buck Lake Road, this family-friendly event will introduce the community to the exciting new amenities and adventures available at this additional entry location. Refreshments will be provided, and hay ride tours will be offered of this newly expanded gateway.
This latest addition to the St. Marks Headwaters Greenway boasts three additional miles of pedestrian and bike-friendly trails, complete with boardwalks, scenic viewing areas, and a bridge. Additionally, this site will include a paved entrance and parking lot, picnic shelters, pavilions, kiosks, restroom facilities, electric vehicle charging stations, a misting station and a nature-inspired playground.
As a vital wetland preservation area, the St. Marks Headwaters Greenway protects bottomland forests, freshwater marshes, and sinkhole habitats while providing opportunities for recreation and exploration. Wetland preservation areas are essential in allowing the wetland to perform its ecological functions while also protecting the wildlife inhabiting the surrounding area. Notably, the County opened the Baum Road Trailhead of the greenway in January 2018 as part of a continued preservation project and features three miles of trails, ideal for biking, hiking, running, and viewing natural scenery.
