Leon County Burn Ban to Expire as Conditions Improve, Fire Safety Still Urged
Leon County’s temporary countywide burn ban will not be extended and will expire at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, December 10, 2025. Recent rains have eased drought conditions and lowered fire danger across the area. Using fire risk tools monitored by the Florida Forest Service, Leon County Emergency Management, and the National Weather Service Tallahassee office—including the drought index and daily fire danger ratings—experts have determined conditions are now safer, therefore the temporary ban will expire as scheduled.
“Thank you to everyone in our community who took this burn ban seriously and did their part to keep neighbors and first responders safe,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Christian Caban. “Even with the burn ban lifted, we encourage everyone to continue using common-sense fire safety whenever engaged in burning and follow all applicable state laws.”
With the temporary burn ban expiring, residents may resume outdoor burning that is allowed under state law. However, Leon County and the Florida Forest Service strongly encourage following fire safety best practices:
- Check conditions before you burn. Avoid burning on windy days or during very dry periods.
- Never leave a fire unattended. An adult should stay with any fire outdoors, including burn piles, fire pits, and campfires.
- Clear the area around your fire. Remove dry leaves, branches, and other materials that could catch fire easily.
- Keep water and tools nearby. Have a hose, bucket of water, or fire extinguisher ready, and keep a shovel or rake on hand.
- Fully extinguish your fire. Douse with water, stir, and repeat until the ashes are cool to the touch.
- Follow state rules and permits. For larger burns, always follow Florida Forest Service guidance and permit requirements.
Leon County Emergency Management will continue to work closely with the Florida Forest Service, the National Weather Service Tallahassee office, and local fire services to monitor drought and fire conditions and will keep the community informed if conditions change.
