County Awarded for Three Outstanding Infrastructure Projects

This month, Leon County Government received three Project of the Year awards from the Big Bend Branch of the American Public Works Association (APWA), recognizing outstanding public works projects. Each year, APWA spotlights exceptional projects in the community that not only meet project goals within budget but exceed public expectations.

"The award-winning projects of Leon County are major contributions that enhance the infrastructure, preserve history, boost tourism, and protect the environment," said Leon County Commission Chair Carolyn Cummings.

This year, the following Leon County Government projects received awards:

  • North Gadsden Street Sidewalk Improvement in the category of Best Performance. This project enhanced and added sidewalks and crosswalks along North Gadsden Street, leading to improvements in safety and connectivity.
  • Ben Boulevard Drainage Improvements Phase 2 in the category of Stormwater. To address sheet-flow flooding during storms on Ben Boulevard, this project improved the drainage system and added roadway conveyance to successfully allow stormwater to flow into the drainage basin.
  • Visitor Information Center – Amtrak Station in the category of Historical Reservation/Preservation. This project restored and transformed Tallahassee's historic Amtrak train station into a one-of-a-kind Visitor Information Center. This extensive renovation project turned the building into a multifunctional space, featuring the Visitor Information Center and Gift Shop, the Visit Tallahassee office, and a community room.

"I couldn't be more proud of the County Public Works team," said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. "Our County staff continues to set the highest standard in public infrastructure through exceptional planning, budgeting, and community engagement."

The APWA Awards Program promotes excellence in the management and administration of public works projects by recognizing the alliance between the managing agency, consultant, architect, engineer and contractor who accomplished the projects together.

The American Public Works Association is a non-profit international, educational and professional association of public agencies, private companies, and individuals dedicated to improving the quality of life for communities through public works projects and services.
