Paramedic Junior Apprentice

A Paramedic is a healthcare professional that cares for the sick and injured in emergency medical settings, mainly outside of a medical facility on an ambulance and in some cases in a hospital emergency department. Paramedics also play a role in risk reduction by providing public educational programs.

The Paramedic Junior Apprentice will shadow and assist Emergency Management Services (EMS) staff on public education and outreach initiatives in addition to performing some clerical duties (filings, typing, copying, enter data, answering phones). Selected students will also have the opportunity to participate in ambulance ride-alongs for the purpose of observing a Leon County Paramedic. Students interested in pursuing a future career as a paramedic or emergency medical technician (EMT) are encouraged to apply.

The Paramedic Junior Apprentice will work in the Leon County Emergency Medical Services Division located in the Public Safety Complex at 911 Easterwood Dr.

Dispatch Junior Apprentice - NEW

A Dispatcher answer calls and communicates with mobile units to send the appropriate response. Dispatchers work in the emergency services field dispatching police, fire and ambulances when someone dials 9-1-1 or non-emergency numbers.

The Dispatch Junior Apprentice will work with a dispatcher in Leon County’s Animal Control Division. Selected students will assist in answering calls from concerned citizens, as well as record keeping and other administrative tasks.

The Dispatch Junior Apprentice will work in the Leon County Animal Control Division located in the Public Safety Complex at 911 Easterwood Dr.

Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Junior Apprentice

A CAD Technician is a key member of the engineering design team that provides design and drafting assistance. Typical job duties include creation of base plans using field survey data and/or GIS information, collection of engineering data such as traffic counts and crash reports, and development of design plans under an engineer’s direction. This position requires familiarity with CAD software and basic knowledge in geometry and trigonometry.

The CAD Junior Apprentice will shadow and assist a Design Analyst, CAD technician and other related staff in the Engineering Services Division. Students selected for this position will have the opportunity to experience the engineering plan development process from start to finish in addition to performing some clerical duties (filings, typing, copying, enter data, answering phones). As a part of the engineering design, some site visits to verify the survey data accuracy and to understand field conditions may be required.

This position is located in the Leon County Public Works Engineering Services Division at 2280 Miccosukee Rd.

Fleet Mechanic Junior Apprentice

A Fleet Mechanic performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of Leon County’s fleet of cars and vehicles. Typical job duties include maintaining and repairing Leon County automobiles, other light vehicles, and heavy and construction equipment. Fleet Mechanics also service and repair EMS vehicles, provide road/field service repairs, and procure parts, materials and supplies, in addition to providing air conditioning maintenance and repair.

The Fleet Mechanic Junior Apprenticeship is only available to students who are dual enrolled in Lively Technical Center’s Automotive Services Program and are able to take the Junior Apprenticeship as an elective class on Fridays from 1pm to 5pm. Students selected for this Junior Apprenticeship will have the opportunity to apply their technical training by shadowing and assisting a Leon County Fleet Mechanic in the maintenance and repair of the County’s fleet of vehicles.

Housing Rehabilitation Junior Apprentice

A Housing Rehabilitation Specialist provides assistance in Leon County’s Division of Housing Services, whose mission is to provide safe, sanitary and affordable homes to low-income citizens. Work involves inspecting homes to determine structural code deficiencies and possible repairs in addition to coordinating the rehabilitation process.

The Housing Rehabilitation Junior Apprentice will assist Leon County’s Housing Rehabilitation Specialist in a variety of projects and tasks. Typical job duties include assisting with site visits, preparing work write ups and specifications for housing rehab projects, preparing purchase order request forms and contractor payment request forms, as well as assisting with Housing Services special events. Students interested in pursuing a future career in architectural or construction engineering are encouraged to apply.

This position is located in the Leon County Office of Human Services & Community Partnerships, Housing Services Division at 918 Railroad Avenue, 32310.

Computer Support Junior Apprentice

Computer Support Technicians provide assist library patrons with using media resources and public-access computers. Typical job duties include maintaining, designing, and implementing changes to the Library’s website, training staff and patrons on computer applications, and generating advertising materials for dissemination via print and social media.

The Computer Support Junior Apprentice will shadow and assist Leon County’s Computer Support Technician in variety of projects and tasks including creating graphics advertisements, and videos for Library events and services. This position also interacts with Library patrons in a customer service environment at the tech media service desk. A variety of software will be used to complete assignments including Microsoft Word, Excel and Access, and web design software including, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premier, Camtasia, Adobe Acrobat, Publisher, Notepad++ and Photoshop. Students interested in pursuing a career in web development, web design, or IT technical support are encouraged to apply.

This position is located in Leon County’s Collins Main Library at 200 West Park Avenue.

IT Tech Junior Apprentice

An IT Technician performs technical work supporting and maintaining a wide variety of desktop computer technologies and IT assets. Typical job duties include installing, configuring, diagnosing, repairing, and upgrading all hardware, software, and peripherals.

The IT Tech Support Junior Apprentice will shadow and assist Leon County IT Technicians with software testing and installation, hardware upgrades (SSD, RAM, etc.), website testing and updates, providing audio/visual support, and a variety of other projects and tasks. Tools and equipment used are personal computer; word processing, database, and spreadsheet software; standard office equipment, scanners, and electronic testing equipment. Physical demands include standing, walking, sitting, pushing and pulling up to 50 pounds.

This position is in Leon County’s Office of Information & Technology located in the Leon County Courthouse at 301 South Monroe Street.

Web Development Junior Apprentice

A Web Developer designs and creates websites. Typical job duties include monitoring, planning, and coordinating all the technical aspects of the web authoring process, including the establishment of standards, instituting proper recovery systems, and general application support of all Intra/Internet web-based projects. Web Developers require a two-year associates degree or professional certifications in web design.

The Web Development Junior Apprentice will shadow and assist Leon County Web Developers in a variety of projects and tasks in the web authoring process. Tools and equipment used are personal computer; word processing, database, and spreadsheet software; specialized software such as HTML, Javascript, and CSS; and electronic testing equipment.

This position is in Leon County’s Office of Information & Technology located in the Leon County Courthouse at 301 South Monroe Street

Graphic Design Junior Apprentice

A graphic designer performs skilled work providing graphic design and creative direction for an organization. Typical job duties include designing print and digital marketing materials, designing presentations, page layout, photography, as well as photo editing and archiving. Graphic Designers are required to have training in the use of specialized design software.

The Graphic Design Junior Apprentice will shadow and assist Leon County’s Graphic Designer in creating collateral used to promote County programs, initiatives, and special events. Tools and equipment used are personal computers, specialized software such as Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Lightroom, and the use of various printers and scanners.

This position is in Leon County’s Community & Media Relations Department located in the Leon County Courthouse at 301 South Monroe Street.
