Sarah O'Dell

At Large Director

About Sarah O'Dell

What motivated you to become a Director for the Friends of the Library?

Pre-covid, I was in the library weekly. When the opportunity arose for me to join an organization whose sole purpose is to support the library’s mission and programming, I jumped at the opportunity to give back to what I believe to be a goldmine of community services (far beyond providing reading material).

What superpowers do you bring to the FOL Board?

While I love to dream big, one of my unique skills is taking a big, nebulous lofty goal and operationalizing it. So, while other folks might call themselves “big picture” or “idea” people, I focus on making those big pictures and ideas reality.

Where were you born, and how long have you lived in Tallahassee?

I was born and raised in Tallahassee.

What is your favorite reading genres?

Any reading that I do for pleasure is bound to be fiction. Mostly likely, you’ll find me reading YA literature or sci-fi/fantasy. I can guarantee that I will love a book if it is set in a post-apocalyptic dystopian future and a determined teenage girl saves the world.

What is your favorite book of all time?

My favorite book of all time is The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, followed closely by The Blind Assassins, also by Margaret Atwood.

Name three recent books you would highly recommend:

  • The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab
  • The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett
  • Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Do you prefer to read printed books, ebooks or audiobooks?

I definitely prefer printed books. But, I like being able to instantly download and start an ebook—particularly when I’m reading a series and I’m anxious to get to the next book. I download audiobooks through the Libby app all the time to listen to while I’m sewing. So I think that I’m an equal opportunity literature consumer.

Where is your favorite place to read?

We have a big back deck. A couple of afternoons a week, once I’ve finished work, but before my husband gets home, I’ll go outside and read on the deck while the dog digs holes in the backyard. It’s definitely the more relaxing part of my day.

What do you do in your spare time?

I don’t have much spare time these days. But when I have it, I will read, quilt, cook/bake and work in my grand backyard food garden.

Are you a dog lover or cat lover?

Dogs. 100%. Cats are whack.
