2010s

Public-Works-Hurricane-Michael

Major Infrastructure Projects:

  • March 2017: The Jackson View Boat Landing opens to the public with improved parking and boat ramp, new dock structures, new deck along with an observation pier, and new park signage, restroom facilities, and landscaping. The total project cost was $826,064.
  • 2016: The $1.3 million Natural Bridge Road Bridge Replacement is completed with a design that minimizes environmental impacts and provides unique features to resemble a rustic timber bridge.
  • February 17, 2016: The 170-acre Fred George Basin Greenway opens with miles of trails, a multipurpose field, a regulation-size baseball field, playground, and more. The total project cost was $5.8 million.
  • December 10, 2015: The 26-acre Okeeheepkee Prairie Park opens with trails and boardwalks. The total project cost was $567,150.
  • March 14, 2014: Cascades Park opens, revealing the stunning transformation of what was once a barren plot of land into a downtown showpiece. This $30-million park, spanning 24 acres, features an outdoor amphitheater with seating for 3,000, 2.4 miles of biking and walking trails, historical monuments, a children’s discovery play area, and expansive green space.

Public Safety-Complex

  • July 11, 2013: Leon County, in partnership with the City of Tallahassee, opens the Public Safety Complex, a multi-purpose facility that houses public safety professionals and serves as the County’s emergency response headquarters.
  • 2012: Lake Jackson Branch moves from its original storefront to a new and expanded 12,000-square-foot space in the same shopping center.
  • November 3, 2011: The new 12,000-square-foot LEED-certified Eastside Branch Library opens on Pedrick Road.
  • October 1, 2011: A new Woodville Branch Library opens in a 2,000-square-foot addition to the Woodville Community Center.
  • 2010: County opens the new Lake Henrietta Park and connection trail/bridge to the City trail system in Silver Lake Park.
  • 2010: Construction is completed on the $5 million Buck Lake Road Improvements from Mahan Drive to Pedrick Road, including new turn lanes, curbs, gutters, and sidewalks, landscaped curbed medians, four new stormwater ponds, new traffic signals, and traffic signal upgrades.

Significant Achievements:

  • April 23, 2019: The Leon County Board of County Commissioners adopts the Leon County Integrated Sustainability Action Plan (ISAP) to integrate sustainability throughout County operations.
  • 2018: Leon County is declared the first #HurricaneStrong community in the nation by the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), recognizing the County’s commitment to resilience.
  • February 29, 2016: The Tallahassee-Leon County Office of Economic Vitality is created within the consolidated Department of Planning, Land Management, and Community Enhancement (PLACE) and under the governance of the Intergovernmental Agency (IA).
  • November 4, 2014: Leon County voters approve the referendum to extend the Blueprint 2020 program, five years prior to its expiration.
  • May 1, 2013: The Domestic Partnership Registry is established by the Leon County Board of County Commissioners and enables adult couples who live in a committed family relationship but who are unmarried under Florida law to register their partnership with the Leon County Clerk of Courts.
  • March 2013: In a partnership involving Leon County, the City of Tallahassee, and the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, the Consolidated Dispatch Agency is established. This initiative aims to provide the fastest and most appropriate response to emergencies for the citizens and visitors of Leon County.

Operation-Thank-You

  • July 11, 2012: Leon County dedicates the Veterans Resource Center, where veterans can receive job resources and apply for benefits.
  • May 11, 2010: Leon County approves changes to its human rights ordinance to deter discrimination and include more protections for LGBT residents.

Key Community Initiatives:

  • October 2018: Leon County leads the community-wide response to Hurricane Michael.
  • September 2017: Leon County leads the community-wide response to Hurricane Irma.
  • April 3, 2017: The Leon County Library Lecture Series launches with a presentation by Dr. Greg Boebinger, director of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory.
  • March 20, 2017: Day-to-day oversight of Emergency Management Services is transferred from the Leon County Sheriff’s Office back to the Leon County Administrator.

Created-Equal-Local-Panel

  • 2016: Leon County creates the recurring "Created Equal" event, fostering discussions on race and racial inequity through engaging civic discourse held in unconventional venues and formats.
  • October 26, 2016: The Jane G. Sauls Fort Braden Branch Library is dedicated in honor of retiring District 2 Commissioner Jane G. Sauls.
  • September 28, 2016: The tree sculpture outside the Leon County Main Library is dedicated. The tree was carved by sculptor John Birch from the trunk of the live oak tree that stood there.
  • August 2016: Leon County leads the community-wide response to Hurricane Hermine.

Leon-Works

  • December 8, 2015: Board approves the Leon Works initiative, the County’s job training program for local youth that includes the annual Leon Works Expo, where high schoolers learn about skilled careers with employers and academic institutions.
  • February 2015: The Leon County Public Library launches the Seed Library program in partnership with the UF/IFAS Leon County Extension Office to promote fruit, vegetable, and herb seed planting in Leon County and encourage residents to grow their own nutritious food.
  • September 11, 2011: Leon County hosts the 10-year anniversary recognition of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Held at the American Legion Post 13 at Lake Ella, the recognition includes a reflection on the spirit of unity and service that gripped the nation following the attacks.

  • 2011: North American Hazardous Materials Management Association Florida-Caribbean Chapter - Picric Acid Award for successfully and safely handling two WWII-era DDT aerosol canisters and the Pickled Skunk Brains Award for the most unusual material handled by a Florida Household Hazardous Waste facility.

  • 2011: BEST (Build Engage Sustain Transform) Neighborhoods Grant - Volunteer Generation Fund awarded Leon County a $25,000 Neighboring Grant. The BEST Neighborhoods Grant is based on neighboring, a model concept of community engagement that uses volunteering as a tool to empower, mobilize and facilitate positive changes within communities.
