Major Infrastructure Projects:

  • October 16, 1979: Leon County bans smoking in the public areas of all County buildings. 
  • January 11, 1978: Leon County signs a lease with Publix Inc. to rent 44,000 square feet of space in the lower level of the Northwood Mall to serve as the public library. 
  • April 5, 1977: Leon County receives a state permit to develop $1.3 million landfill on 600 acres of land on U.S. 27 South. 
  • November 16, 1976: Leon County bans smoking inside during Commission meetings. 
  • September 1975: A small branch library opens in the Bond Community. 
  • July 16, 1975: A $3.3 million bond proposal is adopted by Leon County for major road widening projects to be completed by 1978 on Thomasville Road, Magnolia Drive, Tharpe Street, and Gadsden Street.
  • June 20, 1973: The County adopts an ordinance requiring outdoor swimming pools with a depth of water more than 36 inches and located within 250 feet of a residence to be fenced.
  • September 21, 1972: The Leon County Commissioner supports a proposed toll road route through western Georgia to connect U.S. 27 leading into Tallahassee.
  • August 29, 1972: The Leon County Commission supports the construction of a cloverleaf interchange at the intersection of Interstate 10 and U.S. 27.
  • December 29, 1970: Leon County purchases 254 acres of surplus government land adjacent to the Federal Correctional Institution for $175,000. The land would later become Tom Brown Park.
  • March 25, 1970: Leon County approves paving of Tallahassee Drive, Fawn Lane, and Randall Street.
  • February 10, 1970: Leon County adopts a resolution to pave Stadium Drive between Call and Pensacola streets in partnership with the City and Florida State University.

Significant Achievements:

  • January 31, 1978: Leon County passes a childcare ordinance to prevent illegal childcare centers from operating in private homes. 
  • May 21, 1975: Leon County passes a new law allowing for the sale of wine on Sundays outside of city limits. 
  • March 4, 1974: Leon County Government and the City of Tallahassee host a sesquicentennial celebration featuring a historical pageant, Cascades Park groundbreaking, and candle lighting ceremony. 
  • January 20, 1970: The Leon County Board of County Commissioners adopt an ordinance creating the post of County Administrator. 

Key Community Initiatives:

  • 1973: Leon County creates an environmental services department. 
  • 1970: County implements community-wide radio system for first responders using low-band radio transmission frequencies.
