William Jonas “Bill” Montford was born on August 22, 1947, in Marianna, Florida. He received his graduate degree in educational administration from Florida State University. He joined the Leon County school system in 1969 and worked several years as a math teacher at Belleview Middle School before becoming principal of Godby High School. He was elected to the Leon County Commission in 1982 to fill the seat vacated by Commissioner Jim Crews. During his tenure, Montford advocated for planning for the community’s inevitable growth, investing in the education system, and finding ways to encourage young people to stay in the community to be productive citizens following graduation. He was later elected to the Florida Senate to represent the 6th District.
