Walter Taylor Moore Jr. was born in Leon County on July 18, 1896. He graduated valedictorian from Leon High School in 1916 before studying law at the University of Florida. He practiced law from 1918 until his retirement in 1988. During his career, Moore was a dedicated public servant to Leon County. He served one term on the Leon County Board of County Commissioners from 1919-1920, two terms as a Leon County judge, and two terms as a member of the Florida House of Representatives. He led the School Board as chairman for approximately 20 years. Moore was active in the community outside of his public service roles. He held membership at the Elks Lodge for over 60 years and was the longest-lived charter member of the Tallahassee Exchange Club. In 1968, the W.T. Moore Elementary School was opened and named in his honor. Moore died on July 1, 1989, and is buried in Tallahassee’s Oakland Cemetery.
