Thomas D. McCracken was born in Dawson, Georgia, on August 28, 1895, and moved to Tallahassee in 1930. He worked as a grocery store manager and later as an accountant for the Florida Department of Transportation. In 1943, he began serving as a District 3 Commissioner. He served during World War II, one of the Commission’s most crucial periods, when materials and labor were hard to obtain. He was elected Vice Chairman in 1947. McCracken died on February 14, 1972, and is buried at Oakland Cemetery.
