Robert Howard Gamble

Robert Howard Gamble was born in Botetourt County, Virginia, on September 22, 1815. He moved to Florida in 1826 to manage a family cotton plantation and was instrumental in building the first railroad in Leon County. During the American Civil War, Gamble fought for the Confederacy as Captain of Gamble's Battery at the Battle of Olustee. Following the war, he served as a Leon County Commissioner from 1867-1868. He later served as State Comptroller under Governor Harrison Reed. He died on December 14, 1887, and is buried in St. John’s Episcopal Church Cemetery.
