Mumford Russell (also known as Reverend Russell or Elder Russell) was born 10 miles west of Tallahassee on April 23, 1858. He lived on the same rural homestead for 70 years before moving to an 80-acre plot of land to the southeast of the city. He spent much of his career as a Primitive Baptist minister, both in Leon and surrounding counties. He served as the Leon County Commissioner for District 4 from 1917 until 1930. Russell died October 10, 1944, and is buried in Russell Cemetery.
