Leon Tully

Years of Service: 1941-1942, 1949-1957

Leon C. Tully was born on April 13, 1915, in Tallahassee, Florida. He graduated from Leon High School in 1933 and managed the family business Tully’s Grocery Market, Service Station and Cafe. Tully’s first term with the Leon County Board of County Commissioners began in 1941. A year later, he resigned from the Commission to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was in military service until 1946. He was reelected to the Commission in 1948 and was elected Vice Chairman in 1949 and Chairman in 1952. During his time in office, he advocated for the establishment of four County road departments, worked to secure a new County courthouse, supported a paved county road system, and was instrumental in creating several public parks. Tully served two terms before leaving office in 1957. While on the Commission, Tully was also selected to serve as director, president, vice president, and secretary-treasurer of the Florida Association of County Commissioners. Tully died on December 30, 2003, and is buried at Oakland Cemetery in Tallahassee.
