Jordan Brooks “J.B.” McCollum was born and raised on a 500-acre farm in Leon County, Florida. He graduated from Leon High School and worked at the Tallahassee Democrat in the press room and advertising department for 12 years. He later founded the Town and Country Nursery and Garden Shop and worked for the Leon County Clerk’s office and Leon County Property Appraiser’s office. He was elected to the Leon County Board of County Commissioners in 1967 and served until 1979, representing District 2. He supported the creation of Tom Brown Park, the Civic Center, and the County library, and advocated for environmental regulations, economic development, law enforcement, and neighborhood improvements. He served as Board Chairman from 1970-1971 and 1973-1974. A proud and devoted lifelong resident of Leon County, he also served as a long-time board member of the Tallahassee Museum. He died October 17, 2003, and donated his body to scientific research.
