Jonas W. Toer

Jonas W. Toer was born in Augusta, Georgia, in 1812. Born into slavery, Toer later escaped during the Mexican American War (1846-1848) and moved to Florida in 1866 following emancipation. A prominent figure during the Reconstruction Era (1865-1877), Toer was appointed Justice of the Peace in Leon County and served on the City Council and the Leon County Commission from 1871-1872. He died on May 21, 1872, and is buried at Old City Cemetery.
