Henry Lewis

County Commissioner

Years of Service: 1986-1990

Henry Lewis III was born in Tallahassee, Florida, on January 22, 1950. He graduated from Florida A&M University (FAMU) and later received his doctorate in clinical pharmacy from Mercer University in Atlanta. He went on to work as a pharmacist and an assistant dean at FAMU’s pharmacy school. Lewis served the residents of District 1 on the Leon County Board of County Commissioners from 1986-1990. When elected, he became the first African American person elected to serve on the Board in its history. During his tenure, he fought to bring new jobs, upgraded low-income housing, and parks to his district. Additionally, he was an advocate for environmental protections and worked toward a growth management policy. He served one term before leaving the Board to accept a position at Texas Southern University. Lewis was also active in the community and served as a member of the County chapter of the American Cancer Society, the health advisory council for the state Department of Health Rehabilitation Services, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
