Henry Grady Easterwood

Henry Easterwood

County Commissioner

Years of Service: 1955-1966

Henry Grady Easterwood was born in Ohatchee, Alabama, on June 2, 1900. He moved to Tallahassee in 1930 and was employed by the Seaboard Air Line Railway until 1946. He then went into partnership with Charles B. Clark of the Clark Mattress and Furniture Company. Easterwood was elected to the Leon County Board of County Commissioners in 1955 to represent the citizens of District 4. When he took office on January 7, he had the unique distinction of being the first person to hold a seat on both the County Commission and City Commission simultaneously, as his term as City Commissioner was set to expire the following month. During his three terms in office, Easterwood advocated for modern health standards, a sidewalk paving program, City-County cooperation, construction of the County Courthouse Annex, and a new library. He served as Board Chairman in 1957-1958 and 1961-1962. Active in the community, Easterwood was a member of the Tallahassee Elks Clubs, Masons, Jackson Lodge, and Shriners Club. He died on June 21, 1966, while in office following an illness and is buried at Roselawn Cemetery.
