Dr. Charles Merritt Ausley was born in Camden, South Carolina, on March 22, 1879. He attended the University of Tennessee and Baltimore Medical College (now part of the University of Maryland). In 1901, he moved to Tallahassee to open a medical practice. He was elected to the City Council in 1910, appointed City Health Physician in 1915, and was also an officer of the City Health Board. He was elected to the Leon County Board of County Commissioners for District 3 in 1917 and held the position until his death in November 1940. During his years of service, he championed quality of life improvements such as road and sidewalk repairs, new playgrounds, and food quality inspections. He is buried in Tallahassee’s Oakland Cemetery.
