County Commissioner

Years of Service: 2008-2012

Akin Akinyemi was an architect, land-use planner, and inventor, who ran to represent the citizens of Leon County as At-Large Commissioner in 2008. During his tenure, he was a strong advocate for environmental stewardship, responsible economic development, job creation, ending homelessness, investing in alternative and renewable energy sources, and lowering taxes. He served as Chairman of the Board from 2011-2012. One of his priorities was creating more resources for Leon County veterans and he was a strong advocate for the creation of the Leon County Veterans Resource Center. The center, which opened on July 11, 2012, provided a space where veterans could receive job resources and apply for benefits. Akinyemi was also active with local and state organizations, and served as board member of the Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce and the Capital City Chamber of Commerce.
