About Bailey Howard

What motivated you to become a Director for the Friends of the Library?

Having grown up in a small town in the Florida Panhandle, I know the power of a good library as a resource for everyone in the community. Books are only the beginning: our Leon County libraries are a gateway to so many opportunities and essential services. Working with the Friends lets me serve the community by supporting our libraries in their mission.

What superpowers do you bring to the FOL Board?

Attention to detail, and comic relief--sometimes even intentionally!

Where were you born, and how long have you lived in Tallahassee?

I'm a native Floridian: I grew up in Destin, and I have lived in Tallahassee since 2014.

What is your favorite reading genres?

I mostly read speculative or historical fiction, histories and biographies, and poetry, but I'm easily captured by anything witty and interesting.

What is your favorite book of all time?

It's hard to choose--there are so many moving, exciting, interesting books! But if my house were on fire and I could only grab one, I would choose The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

Name three recent books you would highly recommend:

  • The Mirror and the Light by Hilary Mantel
  • This is How You Lose the Time War, by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone
  • Working, by Robert Caro

Do you prefer to read printed books, ebooks or audiobooks?

I will always choose a print book if I can, but I do enjoy audiobooks on long car trips or while bustling about the house.

Where is your favorite place to read?

In all things, I prefer to be outside: I have a camping hammock that lets me convert any spot with two trees and a nice breeze into an ideal reading space.

What do you do in your spare time?

I enjoy rock climbing, biking, hiking, and cooking. I also enjoy crossword puzzles.

Are you a dog lover or cat lover?

Both! I love all animals, but most especially my pet rabbit, Bun.
