Roses are Red, Violets are Blue Nothing Says Love Like Orange Avenue

Orange Avenue Extension to Open Feb. 14

The City of Tallahassee and Leon County, in coordination with The St. Joe Company, will host a heart-themed ceremony to convey the love that residents of the SouthWood community feel for the new Orange Avenue extension. The newly constructed portion of Orange Avenue between Mossy Creek Lane and Southwood Plantation Road will officially open to traffic following a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, February 14, at 10 a.m. The event will be held near the corner of Orange Avenue and Mossy Creek Lane.

Construction of the new roadway was approved in 2012 by the City and County after citizens shared concerns about the amount of cut-through traffic in nearby residential areas. The St. Joe Company constructed the extension.

“We appreciate the City of Tallahassee, Leon County and St. Joe listening to our concerns,” said John Ray, Supervisor (Seat 4), Capital Region Community Development District, and SouthWood resident. “With this extension of Orange Avenue to Southwood Plantation Road, we expect to see a significant reduction in non-resident traffic on our local roads, and our neighborhoods and children will be safer for it.”

City and County Commissioners, as well as representatives from St. Joe and the Capital Region Community Development District, are scheduled to participate.

At 9:30 a.m. students from Conley Elementary School will help prepare for the heart-themed celebration by decorating the new roadway with sidewalk chalk art. Students will also be on hand to help cut the ribbon to officially open the road.

Homeowners and members of the community are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served.
