AED Registration

An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is a portable device used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). The device can analyze the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm.

SCA is a serious condition that can cause the heart to suddenly stop beating. It can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time. When SCA occurs, the heart's electrical impulses become chaotic and ineffective, and blood stops flowing to the brain, heart, and body. The victim is clinically dead unless someone helps immediately.

The chances of survival increase if a community bystander recognizes the emergency, confirms the victim is not responding, and calls 9-1-1. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) should be started immediately, and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) should be used if one is available.

While CPR keeps the blood circulating, the only effective treatment for SCA and the chaotic rhythm it can produce is defibrillation. Thanks to the audio prompts built into an AED, the bystander will know exactly what to do in the event an AED is needed. The defibrillator will administer a shock only if the device's technology deems it medically necessary.

AEDs are located in many places where people gather. You can find them in first responder vehicles, County buildings, schools, community centers, fitness facilities, churches, airports, businesses, and hotels.

Leon County EMS has established a Community AED Program where an AED Registry is maintained of public AEDs that have been registered within our LCEMS agency as well as with the Consolidated Dispatch Agency (CDA).

When a 9-1-1 call is placed from a facility with a registered AED, dispatchers will provide the caller with the location of the AED in that facility. AEDs have proven to significantly increase survivability and positive outcomes for patients in our community.

Register your public AED device with Leon County EMS.

If you have any additional questions or want help in establishing your own AED program at your facility, call 850-606-2100.
