Commissioner Akin Akinyemi has been a member of the Leon County community for over 20 years. He is a graduate of Florida A&M University’s School of Architecture, and currently serves as President/CEO of Akin & Associates Architects, Inc., a local Architecture and Design firm. In addition to his Master’s degree in Architecture, he also holds Bachelor’s degrees in both Environmental Design and Housing Development.

Commissioner Akinyemi believes that we are truly fortunate to live among people who demonstrate a spirit of community and a desire to make our County a better place to live. His election to the County Commission At-Large seat affords him the opportunity to serve all citizens of our great County.

His top priorities include:

Environmental Stewardship:
The state of the environment has become a primary concern for many Leon County residents and the time has come to figure out how to best care for it, recognize its intrinsic value, and how important it is to our continued well being and prosperity.

Accountable and Accessible Government:
Commissioner Akinyemi believes in a government that is accountable, accessible, ethical, and works for the greater good of all the citizens of Leon County. He believes in celebrating diversity and striving for the equality of all.

Economic and Community Development:
The health of our County depends on sustainable growth. Commissioner Akinyemi believes that economic growth expands opportunities for everyone. The County Commission must balance the budget, generate economic growth and make prosperity achievable for everyone in order to help residents keep jobs and love where they live.

He and his wife of 15 years, Elvira, and their two children are proud to call Leon County home.

Community Outreach

In addition to board involvements, I am involved in hands-on community projects such as Habitat for Humanity; Covenant Partners, Crop Walk, Turkey Trot, TallaFesta, Relay for Life, Heart of the Earth, Keep Tallahassee-Leon County Beauty, Cattle Baron Ball, and many others.  My passion is Education, the Environment, Equity and Strengthening of the Family. I regularly mentor and lecture both K-12 and University students.

I believe in each human’s inherent good nature; and in our collective capacity to do good.  I believe “variety is the spice of life” and that God made us all different so we can complement each other. I believe in the value of hard work; respect for each other and lending a helping hand.

Background

I was born in Lagos, Nigeria on October 12, 1959; moved to the United States in 1982 and to Tallahassee in 1986.

While at the University of Minnesota, I worked as a research associate and “community architect” on a number of urban development studies; sociological approach to design and community improvement projects.  During my Master of Architecture Studies at FAMU and my four years with Sizemore Floyd Architects in Atlanta, I worked on National Energy Studies, Florida Uniform Code Development; wrote my thesis on sustainability; developed Facilities Management and building inventory systems.  I have written white papers and have international volunteer and research experience in Nigeria, Kenya, and Jamaica.

Commissioner Akinyemi is currently holding a series of workshops aimed at increasing Citizen Participation in government actions.
