PARK ATTENDANT
(Four full-time OPS positions, one position with Greenways, one position with Passive Parks & two positions with Park Maintenance, only one application is needed)

PW/Parks & Recreation/Active Parks

Salary Range: $10.00-$19.40 Hourly*

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The employee in the Greenways position develops greenways and open spaces according to management plans and stewardship plans; implements prescribed maintenance practices as outline in stewardship plans through horticultural, silviculture and prescribed burning methods.  The employee in the Greenways position also assists local volunteers and labor pools in development of trails and park features; assists in construction of bridges, fences, and park features as assigned; submits daily reports detailing maintenance activities; monitors grant projects; enforces regulations as necessary through contact with Sheriff’s Office; monitors drinking water wells at greenway sites to insure potability; protects cultural and historic resources of greenways and open space areas. 

The employees in the Park Maintenance (Active Parks) positions are responsible for maintaining park grounds and facilities by picking up litter and inspecting facilities for safety and general repair; cleans restrooms, showers, and sanitary facilities; plants trees, shrubs, flowers, and sod according to specifications; inspects playground areas and athletic fields for safety hazards and makes necessary repairs. The employees in the Park Maintenance positions also maintains baseball infields to protect safety of users and optimizes aesthetics; marks athletic fields as prescribed by league regulations, using field points and lining dust; replaces sports nets on basketball goals, tennis courts, and soccer nets at first indication of wear; installs and removes athletic equipment as necessary to coincide with sports seasons; performs minor masonry work to repair barbecues, stairways, slabs, and sidewalks; applies fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides to promote healthy plant growth and to remove offensive plant materials and/or pests.

The employee in the Passive Parks position logs campground visitors, pavilion renters, and facility users; accepts payments for rental and keeps appropriate records and makes deposits; establishes contact with citizens requesting information about parks and recreation facilities, campgrounds, etc.; monitors drinking water wells at park sites to insure potability; distributes literature to park patrons and post information at designated facilities; erects park rule signs, safety related signs, and visitor information signs in prudent and required areas.

The employees in all positions acts as lead worker to Maintenance Technicians and other Park Attendants; greets visitors and responds to user concerns; distributes literature to park patrons and post information at designated facilities; erects park rule signs, safety related signs, and visitor information signs in prudent and required areas; performs minor carpentry to repair wood structures, assemble picnic tables, construct signs, and improve facilities; repairs, replaces, and installs fences, gates and security devices as required; cuts grass in prescribed areas at the height required for optimum turf vigor; trims bushes, trees, and woody stem plants using hand operated and power tools; eradicates invasive plant species and other unwanted pests; sharpens, fixes and/or repairs all hand tools necessary to perform maintenance tasks; inspects, lubricates, and operates all power tools and equipment according to manufacturer’s specifications.

REQUIREMENTS: Requires graduation from a standard high school or an equivalent and six months of experience in maintaining greenways, grounds keeping, landscaping and maintenance of park facilities; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  Must possess basic knowledge of carpentry and masonry work.  Must possess the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.  Must possess the ability to operate power tools, understand technical specifications, manuals and drawings.  Must possess the ability to lift heavy objects in excess of 50 lbs.  Must possess a valid Driver’s license and a favorable driving record at time of hire.  A Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.  Must pass a Class 2 background check prior to employment.
